Happy Independence Day!

Today August 15, 2011 India celebrates 64 years of independence. The celebrations started off at 9am in the morning with the flag hoisting ceremony at the residence of Consul General of India in Houston. On the special occasion, Consul General Sanjiv Arora very warmly welcomed Indian nationals, dignitaries’ and other friends of the Indian American community in Houston.

The main highlights of the morning function was the speech by the Consul General of India when he shared the address to the nation by the President of India Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil. Present on the occasion, Rathna Kumar expressed her gratitude to the country she was born in and to all the Indian Americans in Houston. Guests also enjoyed patriotic songs and Indian delights.

Spotted at the event University of Houston President Dr. Renu Khator, Dr. Bhalla of ICC, Fayyaz Khan, Sam Merchant, Ramesh Anand, Al Green, Jay Guerrero and many other prominent Indian Americans.

Overall a very patriotic event. Great way to start the morning! Jai Hind!

On Saturday August 13, 2011 more than 200 people gathered at the Durgabari Houston where Indian Music Society and the Tagore Society of Houston hosted Jugalbandi of Sarod and Sitar.

The idea of the event was to rekindle the memories of the two legends from the world of Indian Classical music: Ustad Vilayat Khan and Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. The two have performed on several occasions and have mesmerized many. This time it was their sons Hidayat Hussain and Alam Khan along with Nitin Mitta on the tabla.

The Tagore Society of Houston aims to fulfill Rabindranath Tagore’s dream of a borderless world by spreading Tagore’s thoughts, writings and philosophy. This event was an effort to encourage Indian Classical music and strengthen the mission that it is not just a Bengali organization.

For music lovers and even first timers to classical music the evening was absolutely breathtaking.
