Pratham Holiday Luncheon Draws A Fashionable Crowd Raising $140,000
A-List South Asian Americans gathered to spread the holiday cheer at Pratham’s Holiday Luncheon and Fashion Show on Friday, December 6 at The Junior League of Houston. This event is known to be one of the most popular events that Pratham holds throughout the year, raising a record breaking of $140,000.
The event is designed to raise awareness as traditionally it is Pratham’s last fundraiser for the year, it was in support of the tailoring and beauty center programs that the charity supports in India to provide vocational training to women to enable them to become entrepreneurs and set up their own small businesses.
Hats off to Dr. Marie Goradia who spearheaded this year’s event, she is also the newly elected Pratham Houston President who informed the crowd about her passion for the non-profit which her husband Vijay Goradia co-founded in 1998 (USA chapter).
The keynote speaker for the afternoon was Mike Feinberg, a co-founder of KIPP (for Knowledge is Power Program) which he launched in 1994 for fifth-graders in an inner-city school in Houston. He developed the KIPP Academy Houston while the other co-founder Dave Levin started the KIPP Academy New York.
The highlight of the afternoon was the fashion show presented by Sameera Faridi of Poshak Fashion Boutique and Jamal Nasir of L. K. Bennett. Also featured were makeup booths by Berkha Khokhar of Fashion Face, Sara Duggal of Touch of Elegance, and Saks Fifth Avenue and Country Rose.
