OCA-Greater Houston is hosting the 13th Annual Houston Asian American & Pacific Islander Film Festival (HAAPI Fest) over the course of two consecutive weekends. The 5-day event will span from June 1 through 3 and June 9 through 10 and is kicking off at Asia Society Texas Center. As always, the festival will be closed out with our captivating Arts Night on June 10. HAAPI Fest is continuing its grand tradition of being a celebration of art, film, and music that the Asian American & Pacific Islander (AAPI) community proudly shares each year with the city of Houston.

HAAPI Fest is proud to showcase dynamic stories in “The Tiger Hunter” (playing opening night), a refreshing and genuine comedic narrative of a young South Asian engineer (Danny Pudi: “Community”, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”) immigrating to Chicago during the 1970s to pursue passion and romance, “Gook”, a gripping tale of two Korean American brothers’ (Justin Chon: “The Twilight Saga”, “Seoul Searching” and David So: DavidSoComedy, JustKiddingFilms) struggle to maintain their family shoe store in Paramount, CA and their unique friendship with a young African American girl during the 1992 LA Riots, and “Breathin’: The Eddy Zheng Story”, a powerful documentary exploring the evolution of Eddy Zheng, a Chinese immigrant who became the youngest prisoner (16) at San Quentin State Prison and later became one of the nation’s most recognized leaders on prison reform and youth violence prevention. Lena Khan, director of “The Tiger Hunter”, will speak on Thursday, June 1 at the Asia Society Texas Center on her debut feature film.

Kicking off weekend 2, Ben Wang, director of “Breathin’: The EddyZheng Story”, who is best known for his 2009 feature documentary, “Aoki”, will participate in a post-screening Q&A on Friday, June 9 and will co-lead a TEA Talks discussion on Saturday, June 10 in regards to our current criminal justice system and mass incarceration.

The Festival is also debuting its first High School filmmaker workshop/competition on Saturday, June 3 to nurture the next generation of local AAPI creators as well as continuing the popular Arts Night program on Saturday, June 10 to showcase Houston’s AAPI performing artists.
